We had a great weekend. The cabin was great. We enjoyed the views and activities in the cabin. Looking forward to returning next year.
My husband spent a quite, relaxing, awesome week at the Acorn for our anniversary. I haven’t seen my husband so relaxed in a very long time. We are hoping to come back and we might even share it with our family this time!! One of my favorite memories was watching a buck swimming in the lake right in front of the cottage. When we went to dinner later, he was up by our car!!
We arrived on a very warm Aug. afternoon, and when I stepped into the cottage the beautiful views and refreshing breeze coming through took my breath away! I knew this would be a great week, and it was! Our grandchildren spent many happy hours playing on the beach and swimming in the lake, which was suprisingly warm and great for swimming! We loved the cottage. The accomodations met all our needs-well stocked kitchen, plenty of linens, and we esp. loved having the use of mutliple kayaks and canoes. One day we loaded all of us and our supplies into 2 canoes and a kayak and paddled around the bluff to uninhabited back beach for a wonderful day of swimming, boating, and having hot dogs and marshmallows over a beach fire, a day we will always remember. And the sunsets!!! I think we came home with hundreds of pictures of the sunsets alone. Our outings included a hike above Chimney Bluffs-a beutiful hike but steer clear of the poison ivy, and a couple of car rides over to Sodus Point for lunch on the water and playing on the great sandy beach.
The owners have done an excellent job of hitting that “sweet spot” of creating a feeling very relaxed, laid back and welcoming, but still having everything in very good order, and are very nice to work with. Would recommend this place in a heartbeat, and hope we get to come back some day.
My Lovely wife and I decided to rent a getaway cabin for are honeymoon. Niether of us having done this before we were kind of winging it. We Contacted the owner and everything went smoothly. The pictures in the ad are exactly what you get with all the amenities plus a few extra. The Cottage itself is very nice. Really has a “get away from the city” feel to it. We were there for about a week in very late October. It was awesome. Very quiet, peaceful, beautiful fall colors, crashing waves just footsteps from the backdoor and bedroom window. Some awesome sunsets you can watch from inside the cabin. We would have loved to take advantage of the kayaks but with the water being so cold we decided to hold back. We also noticed that during are stay there was less neighbors around so it was extra quiet. Dave the owner was very helpful. Are first day, the water in the house had a rotten egg smell which we learned is only during the fall/winter season because (from what we understood) the house used water from the bay. We asked if there was a way to get rid of the smell and Dave came by the next morning and did something and i would say about 90% of the smell was gone. ( we were also told and saw the construction equipment that the county is laying down pipes from the county water). Dave also helped us with some nearby activity advice (since we were from southern california). He and his wife spent about 30 minutes on the phone with us letting us know some nice places to check out locally and even 2-3 hours away. Theres also a small town and grocery store less than 10 miles away. Would highly recommend this place espically for the price service, amenities and hospitality by the owners. Strongly recommend for a nice romantic getaway!!! We really want to try and come here for a summer. Thanks Dave.
The photos on this site bring back fond memories of our family respite at Acorn Cottage, a special time we will never forget. Charming, clean, open, marvelous and different views depending on which window you look out, your own little beach on Lake Ontario, the magnificent Chimney Bluffs and yummy restaurants nearby. I wanna go back, I wanna go back!
This was a wonderful little cabin with a cozy, eclectic interior. The furniture is all very comfy. The rooms are packed with an assortment of books, games, VHS cassettes, old maps, and extra blankets. My friends and I showed up looking to play board games all weekend and the large dining room table was perfect for us. And I think it could have been expanded even further, had we needed it.
The views on Lake Ontario were beautiful. It was a cold, blustery fall weekend, but that just created mesmerizing, rolling whitecaps on the lake.
I would definitely recommend giving this cabin a try. Just bring a flashlight: you might need it to get down the long staircase from the parking spot to the cabin.
My wife, 3-year old daughter, and I stayed at Acorn for a week-long late summer vacation and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. We definitely plan to be back in the future.
Future guests should know that this cabin is rustic and comes with the “guests” you might expect to see in a lakeside cabin on the edge of a forest. It is also down a long and steep flight of steps from the parking area, so for people with bad legs or bad balance or babies that need to be carried, it might not be the best place for you. But . . .
. . . if you don’t mind the climb down and you like rustic, you will LOVE Acorn. It is a pretty little cabin right on the edge of Lake Ontario, with the lake in the front yard and beautiful Sodus Bay in the back yard. Acorn is clean and well-maintained and comes with all the amenities that you will need for a vacation. We found the following when we arrived: range/stove; microwave oven; a full complement of cutlery, pots, pans, dishes, knives, cups, bowls, etc.; more sheets and towels than you will ever need, plus a washer and drier for cleaning the used ones; a vacuum cleaner; a stereo system; and a TV with DVD and VHS and basic cable (although we barely needed any entertainment because we were satisfied just sitting on the porch with the lights off, watching the lake and talking at night. It was the most relaxation I’ve had in years.).
Acorn’s location is incredibly quiet. There are no cars passing nearby and the area is not in the flight path for airliners, so you never hear big planes. The sounds you’ll hear are wind and surf. The views of Lake Ontario and Sodus Light are incredible, and when we were there in September, the sun set over the lighthouse. There is little light pollution here and you can see the Milky Way on a clear night. We were also blessed to witness a storm, so we got to see an incredible show of lightning, as well as surf worthy of the Atlantic Ocean. (On nights with no wind, the lake was smooth as glass.)
As for the food in the area, we did not eat out, since the full kitchen allowed us to shop at the local supermarket and farm stands and cook our meals. We enjoyed trips to Oswego, the beaches at Sodus Point and Fair Haven State Park, and exploring the Erie Canal. If you have small kids, don’t miss Burnap’s Farm Stand in Sodus.
Our 3-year old daughter loved her “little house” and we will definitely be back with our expanded family in years to come! Thanks, Acorn!
What a nice rental! Clean and well furnished! All the amenities you could want and more. The owners are close by and always ready to help. The porch is a wonderful addition … with a perfect table for dining, cards, or jigsaw puzzles!
The walk along the beach is loaded with glass, pottery, stone, and driftwood treasures – and a rooster who always speaks when you pass his house. Our daughters and their children spent hours on the beach and in the water. There’s a nice country market that’s easy to get to with homemade goodies, ice cream, and produce. Dinner at the marina was also treat.
Would we revisit? Oh yes we would!
Staying at this secluded cottage was one of the most refreshing breaks our family has ever had. Having the kayaks and canoes available for our use was a nice bonus, and Chimney Bluffs and Sodus Point were only a paddle away. The water in Lake Ontario is crystal clear, and we’d like to come back during the real swimming season. The cobblestone beach is nice to walk along out to the point, and fun for a campfire. It was great to have all linens provided, and the owner was very helpful.
Very enjoyable time, just wish it was longer. Loved the sound of the waves. Enjoyed the canoe ride to Sodus Point for breakfast. The cottage was comfortable and accommodating, with great views!!!!
